You're my new favourite bn! I don't understand how you fumble and get yourself nearly killed in every log, but somehow always manage to pull through. You realise you've done it again and gone and gotten yourself blocked in shady vs a legend pukemage, you go wounded hps, your armour is down, you spam a couple of times through shadyroom, where any normal bn would have gotten pierced once and died on the spot, but not you! You just run around and miraculously kill the elf.

I don't get it, but I don't want to either. You have to be the luckiest bn I've ever seen, and these logs are fantastic. Keep it up!

Edit: Oh, and don't listen to poor losers. They're just upset because they never get this lucky. I'd tell them to relax and be happy for somebody else for a change, but I think this selfishness comes with the new spoiled generation of teenagers.

I think specific spell prefix speed has priority over general spell speed. If you change spell fast and cast normal 'fireball', your fireball will cast normally. Better change your aliases :).

Fascinating log, fascinating comments. The learning curve on MUME is certainly steep, but finding a player that still knows next to nothing about how spell casting speed works after supposedly playing for ten years is a bit unusual.

Although to be honest, a quick search through the help files didn't bring up either of the two points relevant to this log:

1. Specifying a casting speed when casting a spell overrides the 'default' casting speed that you have set;

2. Stored spells are cast at a fixed speed, regardless of what spell casting speed you specify or have set as default (so you might as well always cast them on 'normal' speed or above).

Out of curiosity, does anyone remember how, when, or where they learned either of these two points? I vaguely recall learning the second point 'back in the day' from reading Gray's page. First point, I don't recall.

No, from what I can read we all agree. Except that I said that it might help using thoroughly casting on stored spells (same cast time, higher mana cost, most likely higher damage/success) but casting them fast or quick when they are stored is just retarded.

Hint: If they're spamming you, you unstore. There's something implemented in this game called failed flees, ever heard of it? I heard BNs fail a lot of flees...Not to mention you would have eagles in the other room that you fled from --> damage to anyone that flees down. I'm not exactly sure how boars are that great anyhow, considering they'd hit the darkies too...

Since the delay for casting a stored spell is the same no matter what spell casting mode you use casting a stored spell in any mode faster than normal is both a waste of mana and a reduction in spell power for no benefit.
In some cases it can be useful to cast stored spells in thorough mode, like when you have plenty of mana and know that you only have this chance to get any spell(s) in and want to make it count as much as possible. Some examples being vs. a bashed target and initial quaking of a group where your side will stand or fall depending on how successful you are.
That leaves the majority of situations for when casting stored spells in normal mode is preferable.

Regarding the log I, as most others I believe, waited and waited for Gödel to die. But somehow he managed to avoid that and even win.

Btw, was that elf really a legend?

Yeah I saw he had an orc warrior. But the BNs involved in his fight were lowbies (level 20 and a level 27 with 162 hps and 121 mana? :P) and not exactly the most skilled pkers out there - no offense to Godel or Grimace.

And really, if the 3 ARE spamming you together, it's easy to quake them imo. After fleeing immediately prespam x2 quake (which SHOULD be able to get in before orc follows + bashes you). Bns panic (maybe orc too) after 2 quakes, which leads to them failing flees then fleeing to the other room --> you not getting nuked while bashed. Meanwhile, while they flee down, they get hit by mother eagles and are close to armourless...A few quick bolts + order followers hit or x2 earthquake = 200k xp! Then assuming darkies blocked or picked, you would have tons of mana and eagles to slaughter the orc. A little simplified maybe, but you get the point!

I wouldn't do this say against you or Vardamir, but in general, quakes --> PANIC for players these days --> free exp!

If you specify a spell casting mode explicitly when casting a spell the spell will be cast in that mode, all other spells will be cast in whatever your default mode is at the moment.
So in your question Gödel the spell would be cast in fast mode.

Krae of course it doesn't matter with über-level, mega-overpowered, staffed, over-equipped whitie casters ;)

Spell casting mode, and spell power in general, doesn't directly decide the damage/effect. It will only make it more or less likely for a higher or lower damage/effect. So for high level casters quick spells will often do as much damage as thorough spells, while it is less likely that that is the case for lower level casters.
That said at least levels, and possibly also spell attack eq, does seem to add a certain edge that no amount of luck seem to enable lower level casters to match.

Also when u use spell speed changing, u should make sure you have properly made ur other spell aliases. For example c n 'breath of brisk', so u dont cast quick bob when u forget to change spell speed. Just leave offencive spell w/o casting mode and change it during fight as needed.

I use hotkeys for spells! So I never change the casting speed :P

{F2} -> {cast f 'light' $target}
{F3} -> {cast nor 'light' $target}

It's best to have aliases both for variants with implicit effort and explicit ones. E.g.
lb -> cast 'lightning bolt'
lbq -> cast q 'lightning bolt'
lbn -> cast n 'lightning bolt'
lbt -> cast t 'lightning bolt'

For actual PK you may then have special quick aliases that can be customized and that can work as redirections to these, e.g.:
z -> lbq
x -> lbn

Truth is that for some spells you almost never need to cast them other than normal, but e.g. for bob I can imagine PK situations where casting it on quick could decide the outcome of the fight (e.g. in situations where you are almost exhausted, have no flasks, etc. and any other effort would be too slow to get the spell off).
